In this Tech Talk, Neil Dixon of Loughborough University shares how ACHILLES is challenging how engineers think about the impact of climate change on earthworks, and the implications for their design. He calls for engineers to think more about asset deterioration and consider what can be done to manage and maintain assets.
Learning outcomes
After watching this video, you will:
- Understand the impact that weather event sequences have on earthworks and structures and how analysing this can inform design decisions
- Understand how asset owners and engineers are challenging approaches to earthworks design and management
- Have practical ideas to inform your next project and help you to plan for variable climatic conditions in the future
- Be able to consider how technology and guidance documents can better support engineers’ decisions when designing earthworks
UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Linking our work back to the UN SDGs is a core part of the ICE’s plan and mission. This content ties in with the following SDGs:
- SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure

- SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities
