If the UK is to achieve its targeted reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, it must connect many more sources of renewable energy generation to the national grid. That won’t be easy, though. This huge and complex infrastructure network was never designed to accommodate these sources or the intermittent nature of their output, which presents several technical problems. To solve these and establish a low-carbon grid that is fit for the future, engineers must adopt a ‘whole systems thinking’ approach.
In this Tech Talk, Eloise John, business unit director for energy at AECOM, explains how civil engineers can aid the UK’s decarbonisation drive by ensuring that the national grid can efficiently handle a greener energy mix.
