In this Tech Talk, Stuart Angus, design and sustainability manager at Wills Bros, describes a pioneering project called GAIA (Glasgow Airport Investment Area), on which his firm worked to PAS 2080 principles for the first time in designing and building transport infrastructure.
Applying the PAS 2080 standard was a stipulation of the client, Renfrewshire Council. The council was more receptive than most previous clients had been to the proposed use of innovative design solutions, especially if these could cut the project’s total greenhouse gas emissions.
Its faith was rewarded when an unorthodox approach to an engineering challenge posed by one key asset resulted in a remarkable carbon saving.
